Module 7

Throughout this course, I have had many takeaways that have cemented new thoughts, perspectives, and takes into my head. Here are a few takeaways I have had that will stick with me throughout the next coming months.

The first takeaway is the importance of collaboration with the entire process of School Based Teams, IEP creation, advocating for the students, and the after of the entirety of what is mentioned above. Being able to collaborate with your colleagues about how to best support a student is a great tool at ensuring there are a variety of supports that are able to be utilized. We can also receive a more well-rounded outlook on how best to support that student. This goes for other teachers, support workers, counselors, and educational assistants.

Adding on to that last point of collaboration, I think utilizing the parent and student is something that we often forget can be an extremely vital tool in ensuring they are receiving the support they need. Parents know their student in an environment outside of school, and can provide a greater insight at what their habits entail once they return from school. Students are also an important part of this process. Considering the student will be the one that is involved in accomplishing the goals being set, or attempting to follow the strategies created. Involving the student will allow them to take control of their educational journey and accomplish their goals as time goes on.

The last takeaway I had from this course (although I would not limit it to only three), would be how reading strategies and reading abilities can be compared. While I do not have much to elaborate with this, it has allowed me to rethink some activities we complete within my French language class. While reading strategies do not necessarily equate one’s ability to prove their literacy abilities, they can provide some insight on how people can identify their reading abilities and improve on them as well.
